Avalanche Problem
Wind-drifted snow

New snow

The current avalanche situation calls for defensive route selection.
Fresh snow and large quantities of wind-drifted snow of Christmas Day represent the main danger.
The wind slabs have formed on east, south and west facing slopes. These can be released easily and reach medium size. In all aspects and on steep slopes dry snow slides and avalanches are possible from midday, but they will be mostly small.
Snowpack
>
20 to 40 cm of snow, and even more in some localities, has fallen above approximately 1500 m. The cold fresh snow of Christmas Day and the extensive wind slabs are lying on a crust in all aspects. The wind slabs have bonded poorly with the old snowpack. The strong wind has transported the new snow significantly. Caution and restraint are required.
Tendency
Temporary decrease in avalanche danger as a consequence of warming during the day and solar radiation.
